About Us

BJJim Soltis

Hi, my name is Jim Soltis and I am the proprietor of Paws & Claws of Charlestown. I have an extensive background in veterinary medicine and practiced as a Certified Veterinary Technician in private veterinary hospitals for 20+ years. During that time I received an extensive education in veterinary emergency and triage medicine as well as taking a special interest in exotic species care. At 15 I began learning about animal care in a K9 and feline boarding facility where I was given an understanding of animal husbandry. In addition to the care of domestic animals and veterinary medicine, I also spent a number of years importing exotic marine and freshwater fish and reptiles for the pet trade. During the time that I was building my professional career I also volunteered as a Wildlife Rehabilitator specializing in rabies vector species. The raising, care, rehabilitation and ultimate release of wild creatures back to their natural environment was not only rewarding but gave me a better understanding of animal behavior. My goal over the years has been to build a full comprehensive understanding of the animals and plants that we share our world with and to help provide the proper care and management they require to thrive. Being able to use the knowledge that I have collected over the years allows me to give your companions the care they deserve and will offer you piece of mind.

Animals

I currently reside in Charlestown where I share my home with 2 Maine Coon cats, BJ & Eris, a Senegal Parrot named Darwin who has been with me for 17 years and a number of lizards and plants. Tending to my large English cottage style garden back in my hometown in CT has been a labor of love for many years. One of my favorite things is to share cuttings, seeds and plants with friends and family. I also breed praying mantis and harvest their egg cases in the garden. I’m proud to say that my garden has spread to neighbors in a large radius around the yard and I’m working towards certifying the yard as a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.

Our intention at Paws & Claws of Charlestown is to provide many years of quality care to you and your pets. We pride ourselves in offering good customer service and know you will have a positive experience when working with us. Please feel free to contact us if you do not see the service you require listed, we will always try to work with you to fulfill your animal and plant care needs.

ColbyTania Malone

Hi, my name is Tania Malone and I am a dog walker and pet sitter with Paws & Claws of Charlestown. I have an extensive background in animal care that includes dogs, cats and exotic species too. As a child growing up in Brazil I had many pets. Living close to the rainforest also meant that my father would occasionally bring home orphaned wildlife. Nothing could have made me happier, not only did I have my dogs and cats but I got to learn about the creatures living around me. I knew right away that working with animals was going to be a way of life for me. I moved to the US as a young adult and started a career in animal care as soon as I could. Working with shelter animals at the MSPCA has provided me with an education in animal husbandry as well as an education in compassion.  I have also volunteered at the New England Aquarium and the Franklin Park Zoo. Working with the seals and sea lions was an amazing experience. I also chose to specialize in caring for primates, which was not an easy task. Monkeys are not always as nice as you would like them to be, however their “human” side is endearing and worth the challenge.

I currently share my home with my dog Miles and my three cats, Katy, Baby and Buddy…or should I say, they share their home with me! We all know that the house is run around them and they don’t let me forget it! I spend a lot of my spare time walking with Miles and his friends in their favorite park. They never seem to get tired of a good run.

In the time that I have cared for pets with Paws & Claws, I have made many friends. Some walk on four legs and some on two and I have enjoyed both. I look forward to spending time with my current animal pals and I’m excited to meet new ones. We at Paws & Claws of Charlestown want to be sure that each pet has a good experience with us and that their individual needs are met.
